The Visit of the Magi
2:1-12
1 And
perceiving Jesus' birth, in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the
King, magi from the east came into Jerusalem, 2 saying,
"Where is the brought forth King of the Jews. We saw his star in the rising sky (east) and we came to worship him."
3 And hearing this, King Herod was disturbed and all Jerusalem with him,
4 and gathering all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he ascertained from them, "Where is Christ being born?"
5 And they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for it has been written through the prophet,
6 'And You Bethlehem, Land of Judah, you are among the governors of Judah, for out of you shall
be coming one governing who shall be shepherding the people my Israel.'"
7 Then Herod covertly called the magi to ascertain from them, exactly the time the star
appeared. 8 And sending them into Bethlehem he said, "Go and thoroughly inquire about the little
boy, and if you ever find him, report to me, so that I may also come and worship him.
9 And the ones hearing the King, went and saw the star which they saw in the rising sky, and it
preceded them till coming to rest where the little boy was, 10 and seeing the star they
rejoiced tremendously. 11 And coming into the house, they saw the little boy with Mary, his
mother, and falling, they worshiped him, and opening their treasures, they
brought him presents of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh. 12 and being apprised, in a trance, not to go back to Herod,
they returned to their country through another way.
The Escape to Egypt 2:13-18
13 And after their departure, a messenger of the Lord appeared to Joseph, in a trance, saying,
"Be roused and take the little boy and his mother and flee into Egypt, and there you'll be till I tell you, for Herod is seeking the little boy to destroy him."
14 And being awaken, he took the little boy and his mother, and by night went to Egypt.
15 And he was there till the decease of Herod, to fulfill that declared by the Lord through the prophet
saying, "Out of Egypt I call my Son."
16 Then Herod seeing that he was scoffed at by the magi was very furious, and dispatching (to
put to death), he massacred all the boys in Bethlehem and in all her boundaries, from two-years
and below, according to the time which he ascertained from the magi.
17 This fulfilled that declared through Jeremiah the prophet saying,
18 "Sound in Rama is heard mourning and much anguish; Rachel mourns her children and would not be consoled, that they
are not (slain)."
The Return to Nazareth 2:19-23
19 But after the death of Herod, a messenger of the Lord appeared to Joseph in Egypt, in a
trance, 20 saying, "Be roused and take the little boy and his mother, and go into the land of
Israel, for they have died, the ones seeking the soul of the little boy."
21 And being awaken, he took the little boy and his mother and entered into the land of Israel.
22 But hearing that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, Joseph was
afraid to pass forth, and being apprised, in a trance, he went into parts of Galilee,
23 and settled in the city called Nazareth, so that it could be fulfilled that declared through the prophets,
"Nazarene he shall be called." |
