Psalm 38
(by David)
A Prayer in Times of Trouble
When you are angry, LORD, please don't punish me or even correct me.
You shot me with your arrows, and you struck me with your hand.
My body hurts all over because of your anger. Even my bones are in pain, and my sins
are so heavy that I am crushed.
Because of my foolishness, I am covered with sores that stink and spread.
My body is twisted and bent, and I groan all day long. Fever has my back in flames, and I hurt all over.
I am worn out and weak, moaning and in distress.
You, Lord, know every one of my deepest desires, and my noisy groans are no secret to you.
My heart is beating fast. I feel weak all over, and my eyes are red.
Because of my sickness, no friends or neighbors will come near me.
All who want me dead set traps to catch me, and those who want to harm and destroy me plan and plot all day.
I am not able to hear or speak a word;
I am completely deaf and can't make a sound.
I trust you, LORD God, and you will do something.
I said, "Don't let them laugh or brag because I slip." I am about to collapse from constant pain.
I told you my sins, and I am sorry for them. Many deadly and powerful enemies hate me,
and they repay evil for good because I try to do right.
You are the LORD God! Stay nearby and don't desert me.
You are the one who saves me. Please hurry and help.
Isaiah 52:13-15
The Suffering Servant
The LORD says:
My servant will succeed! He will be given great praise and the highest honors.
Many were horrified at what happened to him. But everyone who saw him was even more horrified because he suffered until he no longer looked human.
My servant will make nations worthy to worship me; kings will be silent as they bow in wonder.
They will see and think about things they have never seen or thought about before.
Isaiah 53:1-12
What God's Servant Did for Us
Has anyone believed us
or seen the mighty power of the LORD in action? Like a young plant or a root that sprouts in dry ground, the servant grew up obeying the LORD. He wasn't some handsome king. Nothing about the way he looked made him attractive to us.
He was hated and rejected; his life was filled with sorrow and terrible suffering. No one wanted to look at him. We despised him and said, "He is a nobody!"
He suffered and endured great pain for us, but we thought his suffering was punishment from God.
He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking our punishment, he made us completely well.
All of us were like sheep that had wandered off. We had each gone our own way, but the LORD gave him the punishment we deserved.
He was painfully abused, but he did not complain. He was silent like a lamb being led to the butcher, as quiet as a sheep having its wool cut off.
He was condemned to death without a fair trial. Who could have imagined what would happen to him? His life was taken away because of the sinful things my people
had done. He wasn't dishonest or violent, but he was buried in a tomb of cruel and rich people.
The LORD decided his servant would suffer as a sacrifice to take away the sin and guilt of others. Now the servant will live to see his own descendants.
He did everything the LORD had planned.
By suffering, the servant will learn the true meaning of obeying the LORD. Although he is innocent, he will take the punishment for the sins of others, so that many of them will no longer be guilty.
The LORD will reward him with honor and power for sacrificing his life. Others thought he was a sinner, but he suffered for our sins and asked God to forgive us.
Matthew 9:9-13
Jesus Chooses Matthew
(Mark 2.13-17; Luke 5.27-32)
As Jesus was leaving, he saw a tax collector
named Matthew sitting at the place for paying taxes. Jesus said to him, "Come with me." Matthew got up and went with him.
Later, Jesus and his disciples were having dinner at Matthew's house.
Many tax collectors and other sinners were also there. Some Pharisees asked Jesus' disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and other sinners?"
Jesus heard them and answered, "Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do.
Go and learn what the Scriptures mean when they say, `Instead of offering sacrifices to me, I want you to be merciful to others.' I didn't come to invite good people to be my followers. I came to invite sinners."
Luke 4:16-30
The People of Nazareth Turn against Jesus
(Matthew 13.53-58; Mark 6.1-6)
Jesus went back to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and as usual he went to the meeting place on the Sabbath. When he stood up to read from the Scriptures,
he was given the book of Isaiah the prophet. He opened it and read,
"The Lord's Spirit has come to me, because he has chosen me to tell the good news to the poor. The Lord has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to free everyone who suffers,
and to say, `This is the year the Lord has chosen.' "
Jesus closed the book, then handed it back to the man in charge and sat down. Everyone in the meeting place looked straight at Jesus.
Then Jesus said to them, "What you have just heard me read has come true today."
All the people started talking about Jesus and were amazed at the wonderful things he said. They kept on asking, "Isn't he Joseph's son?"
Jesus answered:
You will certainly want to tell me this saying, "Doctor, first make yourself well." You will tell me to do the same things here in my own hometown that you heard I did in Capernaum.
But you can be sure that no prophets are liked by the people of their own hometown.
Once during the time of Elijah there was no rain for three and a half years, and people everywhere were starving. There were many widows in Israel,
but Elijah was sent only to a widow in the town of Zarephath near the city of Sidon.
During the time of the prophet Elisha, many men in Israel had leprosy.
But no one was healed, except Naaman who lived in Syria. When the people in the meeting place heard Jesus say this, they became so angry
that they got up and threw him out of town. They dragged him to the edge of the cliff on which the town was built, because they wanted to throw him down from there.
But Jesus slipped through the crowd and got away.
John 15:18-27
The World's Hatred
If the people of this world
hate you, just remember that they hated me first. If you belonged to the world, its people would love you. But you don't belong to the world. I have chosen you to leave the world behind, and that is why its people hate you.
Remember how I told you that servants are not greater than their master. So if people mistreat me, they will mistreat you. If they do what I say, they will do what you say.
People will do to you exactly what they did to me. They will do it because you belong to me, and they don't know the one who sent me.
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin.
Everyone who hates me also hates my Father. I have done things that no one else has ever done. If they had not seen me do these things, they would not be guilty. But they did see me do these things, and they still hate me and my Father too.
That is why the Scriptures are true when they say, "People hated me for no reason."
I will send you the Spirit who comes from the Father and shows what is true. The Spirit will help
you and will tell you about me. Then you will also tell others about me, because you have been with me from the beginning.
John 16:1-4
I am telling you this to keep you from being afraid.
You will be chased out of the Jewish meeting places. And the time will come when people will kill you and think they are doing God a favor.
They will do these things because they don't know either the Father or me.
I am saying this to you now, so that when the time comes, you will remember what I have said. I was with you at the first, and so I didn't tell you these things.
Ephesians 1:3-14
Christ Brings Spiritual Blessings
Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for the spiritual blessings that Christ has brought us from heaven!
Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us to live with him and to be his holy and innocent and loving people.
God was kind and decided that Christ would choose us to be God's own adopted children.
God was very kind to us because of the Son he dearly loves, and so we should praise God.
Christ sacrificed his life's blood to set us free, which means that our sins are now forgiven. Christ did this because God was so kind to us. God has great wisdom and understanding,
and by what Christ has done, God has shown us his own mysterious ways.
Then when the time is right, God will do all that he has planned, and Christ will bring together everything in heaven and on earth.
God always does what he plans, and that's why he appointed Christ to choose us.
He did this so that we Jews would bring honor to him and be the first ones to have hope because of him.
Christ also brought you the truth, which is the good news about how you can be saved. You put your faith in Christ and were given the promised Holy Spirit to show that you belong to God.
The Spirit also makes us sure that we will be given what God has stored up for his people. Then we will be set free, and God will be honored and praised.
1 Peter 2:1-10
A Living Stone and a Holy Nation
Stop being hateful! Quit trying to fool people, and start being sincere. Don't be jealous or say cruel things about others.
Be like newborn babies who are thirsty for the pure spiritual milk that will help you grow and be saved.
You have already found out how good the Lord really is.
Come to Jesus Christ. He is the living stone that people have rejected, but which God has chosen and highly honored.
And now you are living stones that are being used to build a spiritual house. You are also a group of holy priests, and with the help of Jesus Christ you will offer sacrifices that please God.
It is just as God says in the Scriptures, "Look! I am placing in Zion a choice and precious cornerstone. No one who has faith in that one will be disappointed."
You are followers of the Lord, and that stone is precious to you. But it isn't precious to those who refuse to follow him. They are the builders who tossed aside the stone that turned out to be the most important one of all.
They disobeyed the message and stumbled and fell over that stone, because they were doomed.
But you are God's chosen and special people. You are a group of royal priests and a holy nation. God has brought you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Now you must tell all the wonderful things that he has done. The Scriptures say,
"Once you were nobody. Now you are God's people. At one time no one had pity on you. Now God has treated you with kindness."
